Master in Advanced Mathematics at the University of Barcelona
The Master in Advanced Mathematics is intended for graduate students with certificates or bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics. It is also open to holders of other diplomas requiring an advanced background in this subject. You can find here the dates about pre-enrollment for the course 2022-23.
The master also provides students with general skills and methodological tools to pursue scientific or professional activities in the fields of Mathematics and its applications. In particular, it aims to enhance the students ability to work in interdisciplinary environments, to express mathematical ideas correctly, both in oral presentations and written work, and to introduce them to the relevant computer technologies.
This master can be done jointly with the Master in Fundamental Principles of Data Science, in a double itinerary.
To provide advanced training in mathematics.
To introduce students to the world of research in preparation for PhD studies. In case you are interested in enrolling in our PhD program after the master, it is important to notice that the admissions to the PhD program for the “next” academic year must be requested during the “current” academic year. For further information please visit the web page (admissions) of the PhD program in Mathematics and Computer Science. See also the calendar.
To offer professional specialization, preparing students for skilled positions in university teaching and research, government, industry, banking, finance and insurance, consultancy, information and communication technologies, and other related areas.
To obtain the Master’s Degree in Advanced Mathematics, students must complete 60 ECTS credits and, if necessary, some complementary courses.
Each student will be assigned a tutor who will help him/her to select the specific courses, based on the student’s background and professional goals.
The courses included in the Master’s Degree syllabus belong to several different areas of Mathematics.
Advanced Methodology in Mathematics (3 ECTS)
- Advanced Mathematics for Scientific Challenges (6 ECTS)
- Final Project (15 ECTS)
Optional courses (6 ECTS)
Introduction to Algebraic Geometry
Applied Harmonic Analysis
Complex Analysis in One and Several Variables
Functional Analysis and Partial Differential Equations
Geometrical Methods in Number Theory
- Geometry and Topology of Manifolds
Logic and Algebra
Each of the optional courses has a study load of 6 ECTS credits. Students must choose a total of six optional courses, and conclude with a Final Project of 15 ECTS. The final project must be carried out under the supervision of a lecturer at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science (eventually co-advised from an external professional). Students may base their final project on an internship carried out with a company.
