International Mention

Requirements for Obtaining the International Mention

International Research Stay: During the training period, the doctoral student must have completed one or more research stays, lasting at least three months in total, outside of Spain, at one or more higher education institutions or research centers. At least one of these stays must have a minimum duration of one month.
The stays and activities must be endorsed by the thesis supervisors and authorized by the academic committee of the doctoral program. Once completed and validated by the host institution, they must be recorded in the doctoral student’s activity document.

Language Requirement
Part of the doctoral thesis—at minimum, the abstract and conclusions—must be written and defended in one of the commonly used scientific communication languages in the relevant field of knowledge, other than any of the official languages of Spain.
This requirement does not apply if the research stays, evaluation reports, and experts are from a Spanish- or Catalan-speaking country or territory.

External Reviewers
The two external experts evaluating the thesis must belong to a higher education institution or research center outside of Spain. These individuals must not be the same as those who hosted the doctoral student or who were involved in supervising or mentoring the student’s work at the host institution.

Thesis Examination Committee
At least one member of the thesis examination committee must hold a doctoral degree and be affiliated with a higher education institution or research center outside of Spain.

Co-supervised theses (cotutelle)
Co-supervised theses in cotutelle may also qualify for the International Doctorate Mention if the research stays are carried out at institutions other than those included in the formalized agreement.

Place of the Thesis Defence

The thesis defence must take place at Universitat de Barcelona or, in the case of cotutelle, at any of the participating universities or as provided for in the respective collaboration agreements.
