Industrial doctorate

The industrial mention is granted based on collaboration with companies or entities linked to the social and economic fabric, with the aim of strengthening ties between academia and the public or private sectors. It is awarded when the following requirements are met:

  • The thesis must be developed within the framework of a research project conducted by a public or private company, entity, or public administration, and must be of industrial, commercial, social, or cultural interest. A report must be submitted demonstrating the direct relationship between the doctoral thesis and the work carried out by the doctoral student at the company, entity, or administration. This report must be approved by the University. Universities, national or regional public research organizations, and university hospitals are excluded. Exceptionally, the thesis may be developed in one of these institutions—excluding universities—only if its content is closely related to implementation.
  • A collaboration agreement must be signed between the company, entity, or public administration and the University for the academic development of the doctoral thesis. This agreement must outline the responsibilities of each party.
  • The doctoral student must have been employed by the company, entity, or public administration involved in the research project for at least one year during the preparation of the thesis. In any case, part of the doctoral thesis must be carried out within the company, entity, or public administration.

The doctoral student must have a supervisor and/or tutor designated by the University, and a responsible person appointed by the company, entity, or public administration, who may, where applicable, serve as the thesis director in accordance with the doctoral program’s regulations. The company-appointed responsible person may not, under any circumstances, be part of the thesis examination committee.

The industrial mention is automatically awarded to doctoral students who receive a grant for industrial doctoral projects through the specific program of the Government of Catalonia (Generalitat de Catalunya).
