Length of the doctorate

Standard Duration

  • Full-time: Maximum of four (4) years
  • Part-time: Maximum of seven (7) years

Duration for Candidates with Disabilities
Applies to candidates with a legally recognized disability equal to or greater than 33% in Spain.

  • Full-time: Maximum of six (6) years
  • Part-time: Maximum of nine (9) years

 

Calculation of Duration: The duration is calculated from the date of first enrollment to the date the doctoral thesis is submitted for deposit.
Extension of the Duration: If the maximum duration expires without the thesis having been submitted, the academic committee of the program may grant a one-year extension, upon formal request by the doctoral candidate.

Temporary or permanent withdrawal: In all cases, there is the option of temporary or permanent withdrawal.

Change of dedication: The doctoral student may request a change in the study commitment (full-time or part-time) only once. This must be done before the maximum duration of the studies has been reached, and provided that an extension has not already been granted. Except in justified cases, this request must be submitted and resolved before the start of the academic year.
